This wonderful mural was painted in 1993 by our very own club member and well known artist Gloria Bartels. It is hanging in the office building at 609 E. Orangeburg Ave. We are so happy to see that this piece of art history is still on display for runners to relate to and enjoy.
Gloria shared information with us about how the mural came to be. “I was commissioned by Michelle Lacy Interiors who was responsible for doing the design work in this building. It was decided I was to paint a picture of runners too be placed on a large frame designed especially for the curved wall flanking the stairs case. Since I was a member of Shadow Chase Running Club and a friend of Barbara Miller, I decided to use local runners combining them into one large painting. If my memory is correct I believe Barbara Miller supplied me with pictures of runners running in different races. I laid them out on a table and arranged them in the order they are in to create the right composition. Dr Roget was obviously going to be in it since his practice was there as well as Barbara, Heidi, Charlie and AL. I am the runner in the back with the billed cap, the runner to my left is my friend Janis Richardson, the one on my right not sure. I’m so happy it is still on display and enjoyed by so many people after all these years. It truly is an honor to be part of the history of Shadow Chase Running Club. Thanks to Barbara, Mike and Heidi I still get to display my art for Spirit of Giving Race, so awesome!!!”
Runners in the photo are from left to right are Heidi Ryan, Allen Miller, Charlie Johnson, Barbara Miller, another image of Allen Miller, #1 in the background is Dr. Vance Roget, Doreen Brown & Heidi Ryan again. #149 we can’t identify. Those in the back row are from left to right are Linda McFadden, Gloria Bartels and Janice Richardson.
Heidi also shared with us the image of her on the right with her arms up is when she qualified for the Boston Marathon for the first time at the California International Marathon in 1991. Happy moment for sure!
